Interesting Facts About David

In 1994, David had the opportunity to work with artist Jonathan Clowes on a 40 foot hanging sculpture. The project began on the coast of Maine where a crew of 20 craftsman constructed and partially assembled the sculpture. It was then air freighted to France and trucked to the coastal town of Saint-Nazaire. Jonathan and his family with the help of David and other craftsman including a French crew finished the assembly and installed the sculpture on RCCL’s Rhapsody of the Seas ocean liner. 

 

 

 

MiniatureBench1David’s 1/3rd scale model of a 1890s woodworking bench was chosen for Lake Erie Toolworks’ woodworking bench of the month for April 2015. This bench was an opportunity for David to showcase his outstanding craftsmanship and precision woodworking skills. The bench is hand-made and includes hand cut dovetails, mortise & tenon joinery and turned vise screws made using Lignum Vitae wood. Hand cut dovetails and how well they are made is often the measure of a custom furniture maker and his or her level of craftsmanship.

 

 

 

ziggurat2In 1985, David, while working with artist Wendell Castle built the Ziggurat Clock. This was one of 13 Tall case clocks that Wendell designed for a NY city show. The Ziggurat and the other clocks were built in Wendell’s upstate NY studio. David worked with Wendell and other fine woodworkers building art furniture for museums, galleries and private individuals.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Arts-and-Crafts-Calendar-FrameIn 2011, David’s article on building a custom Arts & Crafts calendar frame was published in the Woodworkers Journal magazine. This frame is another example of David’s extraordinary talent as a Wichita custom furniture maker. David’s craftsmanship is what separates his shop from other Wichita woodworking shops. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MattPinewoodDerby1David has been involved in scouting and has hosted many programs at his shop. David’s son Matt, has been in scouting since he was a first grader and has competed in pinewood derby races since then. With David’s help Matt has earned several trophies and in 2015 achieved the triple crown, grand champion in his pack at district and grand champion at Quivira Council’s pinewood derby races.

 

 

 

 

HammonTSaw1David has been using his modified printers’ saws for over 20 years. These were made by the Hammond Machinery Builders Inc. His article on how he modified the saws appeared in the October, 2011 issue of the Woodworker’s Journal. David considers the saw indispensable for custom woodworking, building custom cabinets and for his woodworking classes.
